ulcers
Open digestive wounds
Ulcers are open sores that form on internal or external body surfaces and resist healing.
Most commonly, the term refers to peptic ulcers—erosions in the stomach or intestinal lining once blamed on stress but now known to result mainly from bacterial infection or medication.
Mouth ulcers are painful spots inside the cheek or on the tongue.
Bedsores are ulcers caused by prolonged pressure.
Figuratively, something that ulcerates eats away at tissue or peace of mind.
