Competitive selection events
Tryouts are competitive evaluations where people demonstrate their abilities to earn a place on a team, in a cast, or in some selective group.
Athletes try out for sports teams; actors try out for roles.
The word implies that selection isn't guaranteed—you're being tested against others or against a standard: Tryouts for the basketball team start Monday.
