triple sec

Citrus cocktail spirit

Triple sec is an orange-flavored liqueur, clear and intensely sweet, used primarily as a cocktail ingredient rather than drunk straight.

The name is French, meaning "triple dry"—though the liqueur is anything but dry.

Cointreau and Grand Marnier are upscale versions.

Essential in margaritas, cosmopolitans, and sidecars: Add an ounce of triple sec.
