trench foot

Wet-sock soldier's curse

Trench foot is a painful condition caused by prolonged exposure of the feet to cold, wet, and unsanitary conditions.

It became notorious during World War I, when soldiers standing for days in waterlogged trenches developed numbness, swelling, and tissue damage that could lead to gangrene.

The condition still occurs among homeless people, hikers, and others whose feet remain wet and cold for extended periods without proper care.
