duckboards
Slatted wooden walkways
Duckboards are wooden slats joined together to form a walkway over muddy or wet ground.
The term is strongly associated with World War I, when such planking lined the floors of trenches: The soldiers trudged along the duckboards through ankle-deep mud.
The name likely comes from the slatted design resembling a duck's webbed foot.
