doughboys

Great War soldiers

Doughboys were American infantrymen, especially those who served in World War I.

The term predates that war—it appeared during the Mexican-American War and possibly earlier—but its origin is uncertain.

Theories involve flour-dusted uniforms, adobe dust, or doughy brass buttons, but none is conclusive.

My grandfather was a doughboy in France.
