emancipate

Release from bondage

To emancipate is to set free from bondage, oppression, or legal restriction.

The word carries historical weight from slavery and liberation movements: Lincoln's proclamation emancipated enslaved people in Confederate states.

It extends to any release from constraining authority—a minor may be legally emancipated from parental control, or someone might feel emancipated from outdated traditions: Leaving home emancipated her from her family's expectations.
