drift net
Current-carried catcher
A drift net is a large fishing net that hangs vertically in the water, suspended by floats at the top and weights at the bottom, allowed to drift with currents to catch fish by their gills.
Drift nets can stretch for miles and are controversial for their indiscriminate catch of dolphins, sea turtles, and other marine life.
Many countries have banned or restricted their use.
