Joseph Smith

LDS church founder

Joseph Smith (1805–1844) was the American founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, claiming to have received golden plates from an angel and translating them into the Book of Mormon.

He established the Church of Christ in 1830, later renamed the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Smith was killed by a mob while jailed in Illinois.

Mormons regard him as a prophet; critics view him as a fraud.
