theatron

Greek viewing area

The theatron is the seating area in an ancient Greek theater—the curved, tiered section where the audience sat to watch performances.

The word literally means "viewing place." In discussions of classical drama and archaeology, theatron distinguishes the audience space from the orchestra (where the chorus performed) and the skene (the stage building): The theatron at Epidaurus could seat fourteen thousand spectators.
