buskin
High theatrical footwear
A buskin is a thick-soled boot reaching to the calf or knee, worn by actors in ancient Greek and Roman tragedy to add height and dignity.
By extension, buskin refers to tragic drama itself, often contrasted with the sock of comedy: He preferred the buskin to the sock.
The word is literary and historical.
