amphitheatre
Oval spectator venue
An amphitheatre is an oval or circular structure with tiered seating rising around a central open area, designed so audiences can view events from all sides.
The ancient Romans built amphitheatres for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles; the Colosseum is the most famous example.
Modern amphitheatres are typically outdoor venues for concerts and performances, often with seating arranged in a semicircle facing a stage.
Also spelled amphitheater.
