bell rope

Cord for ringing

A bell rope is a rope attached to a bell, pulled to ring it.

Church bell towers traditionally have bell ropes hanging down to ground level, allowing ringers to sound the bells from below.

The term extends to any cord or pull used to activate a bell, including the ropes passengers once pulled to signal a bus driver.
