tailing

Covertly pursuing someone

Tailing is following someone closely, especially in surveillance: The detective spent three days tailing the suspect.

In mining and industrial contexts, tailings (usually plural) are the waste materials left over after extracting valuable ore or processing raw materials.

These residues often pose environmental concerns when stored in tailing ponds.

The word also describes the diminishing end of something, as in the tailing off of a storm or a conversation.
