downwash

Air pushed downward

Downwash is the downward flow of air deflected by an aircraft's wings or rotor blades during flight.

As a wing generates lift, it pushes air downward; this column of moving air affects anything beneath it.

Helicopter downwash is particularly strong: The downwash from the chopper flattened the grass.

In aerodynamics, downwash also influences drag and the behavior of trailing aircraft.
