tailplane

Aft horizontal surface

A tailplane is the horizontal stabilizing surface at the rear of an aircraft, typically mounted on or near the tail.

It provides pitch stability and usually includes elevators for controlling the aircraft's nose-up or nose-down attitude.

Also called a horizontal stabilizer, especially in American usage.
