tail fins

Retro automotive styling

Tail fins are the vertical stabilizing surfaces at the rear of an aircraft, rocket, or missile, providing directional stability during flight.

On fish, the tail fin (or caudal fin) is the vertical fin at the end of the body that propels and steers.

In automotive design, tail fins were the exaggerated rear fender extensions on American cars of the 1950s and early 1960s, inspired by jet aircraft and epitomizing the era's futuristic styling: a pink Cadillac with massive tail fins.
