ground effects

Underbody air management

Ground effects refers to aerodynamic changes that occur when a vehicle or aircraft operates close to the ground.

Air pressure builds beneath the body, creating lift for aircraft during takeoff and landing, or downforce for race cars through specially designed underbodies.

In automotive culture, ground effects also names the plastic body kits—side skirts, air dams, spoilers—that give cars a lowered, aggressive appearance: He installed ground effects on his Honda Civic.
