gybes

Downwind boom swings

Gybes is the plural of gybe, a sailing maneuver where a boat turns its stern through the wind, swinging the sail from one side to the other.

The term also covers the verbal uses—to execute such a turn or to cause a sail to shift: The crew gybed twice on the downwind leg.

Also spelled jibes in American English.
