underlay

Beneath the carpet

Underlay is a layer of material placed beneath something else for support, cushioning, or protection.

Carpet underlay goes between carpet and floor.

The word also serves as the past tense of underlie: A fundamental assumption underlay their entire argument.

In printing and music, underlay refers to positioning text beneath something—notes beneath a musical staff, or material beneath type to raise it.
