sub-Saharan Africa
Below the desert
Sub-Saharan Africa is the region of Africa south of the Sahara Desert, encompassing most of the continent's landmass and population.
The term distinguishes this area from North Africa, which has closer cultural and historical ties to the Mediterranean and Arab world: sub-Saharan Africa faces distinct development challenges.
The lowercase form is nonstandard.
