Anopheles

Malaria-spreading mosquito genus

Anopheles is a genus of mosquito, several species of which transmit malaria parasites to humans.

The name comes from Greek for "useless" or "harmful." Female Anopheles mosquitoes are the vectors—they pick up the parasite when feeding on infected blood, then pass it to subsequent hosts.

Anopheles mosquitoes breed in standing water.
