hawthorn

Red berry shrub

Hawthorn is a thorny shrub or small tree of the rose family, bearing clusters of white or pink flowers and small red berries called haws.

The dense, spiny branches make hawthorns useful for hedgerows.

In folklore, hawthorn is associated with both good and ill luck—fairy trees in Celtic tradition, yet also used for May Day garlands: The hawthorn was in full bloom.
