latches

Simple door locks

Latches are simple fastening devices that hold doors, gates, or lids closed without requiring a key.

A typical latch consists of a bar or bolt that drops into a catch; you lift it to open.

The verb latch means to fasten with such a device, but it extends figuratively: if you latch onto an idea or person, you attach yourself firmly and perhaps obsessively.

In electronics, a latch is a circuit that maintains its state until reset.
