standard transmission

Clutch-pedal driving system

Standard transmission is another name for manual transmission—a vehicle gearbox that requires the driver to shift gears using a clutch pedal and gear lever.

The term reflects that manual was once the default: My first car had standard transmission.

Now largely replaced by "manual" as automatic transmissions have become the norm.
