H-pattern

Stick shift layout

An H-pattern is the configuration of a manual transmission shifter where gears are arranged in an H-shaped layout, with parallel vertical paths connected by a horizontal crossover.

The driver moves the lever through this pattern to select gears: He learned to drive on a car with an H-pattern shifter.

The term distinguishes traditional manual gearboxes from sequential shifters where gears are selected in linear order.
