countershaft
Secondary transmission shaft
A countershaft is an intermediate shaft in a mechanical system that transmits power between the main driving shaft and the driven components.
In a manual transmission, the countershaft carries gears that mesh with those on the main shaft, enabling different gear ratios.
The term appears in machinery where indirect power transfer is needed: The countershaft connects the motor to the lathe.
