stick shift

Non-automatic gear selector

A stick shift is a manual transmission in a vehicle, or the lever used to operate it.

The driver selects gears by moving the stick and engaging a clutch pedal, unlike an automatic transmission that shifts on its own: I learned to drive on a stick shift.

Also called a manual or standard transmission.
