gear lever

Manual transmission control

A gear lever is a handle in a vehicle that the driver moves to select gears—park, reverse, neutral, and forward gears in automatic transmissions, or numbered gears in manual ones.

Also called a gear stick or, in American English, a gear shift.

She put her hand on the gear lever and shifted into third.
