learning curve

Mastery over time

A learning curve is the rate at which someone acquires a new skill or knowledge.

Originally a graph plotting improvement over time, it now usually describes difficulty: a steep learning curve means something is hard to master quickly, though logically "steep" should mean rapid progress.

The software has a steep learning curve, but it's worth the effort.
