Click-locking pawl mechanism
A detent is a mechanical device that temporarily holds a moving part in a fixed position, typically using a spring-loaded ball or lever that clicks into a notch or groove.
Detents create the satisfying click you feel when rotating a dial to distinct settings or when a door latch catches.
The mechanism allows movement in one direction while resisting movement in the other until enough force is applied to overcome it.
