muscle car

High-horsepower American auto

A muscle car is an American-made two-door car with a powerful engine, typically from the 1960s and 1970s.

The term evokes an era when Detroit automakers competed to put the biggest V8 engines in mid-sized bodies: The Pontiac GTO is considered the original muscle car.

Modern high-performance American cars are sometimes called muscle cars by extension, though purists reserve the term for the classic era.
