squat racks

Weightlifting safety frames

A squat rack is a piece of weight-training equipment consisting of two upright posts with adjustable horizontal supports that hold a barbell at shoulder height, allowing a lifter to safely load the bar onto their back for squats.

Most squat racks include safety bars or catches positioned lower to catch the weight if the lifter fails a rep.

The term often appears in gym culture discussions about equipment availability: Someone's been curling in the squat rack for twenty minutes.
