collars

Shirt neck parts

Collars are bands that encircle the neck.

A shirt collar frames the face; a dog collar holds tags and a leash.

The word extends to anything ring-shaped that encircles: a pipe collar, a bearing collar.

To collar someone is to grab them by the collar or, more broadly, to apprehend: Police collared the suspect outside the bank.

A collar can also mean an arrest itself.

Blue-collar and white-collar distinguish manual laborers from office workers, based on traditional work attire.
