soundsystem

Music playback equipment

A soundsystem is audio equipment assembled for amplified music playback—speakers, amplifiers, turntables or other sources, and mixing gear.

The term originated in Jamaican music culture, where mobile soundsystems became the foundation of reggae and dancehall scenes, with crews competing for the loudest, clearest bass.

The concept spread through dub, hip-hop, and electronic music: The soundsystem shook the warehouse walls.
