gargantuan

Beyond merely big

Gargantuan means enormous or immense, typically beyond what seems normal or expected.

The word comes from Gargantua, the giant king in Rabelais's sixteenth-century satire who had an appetite to match his size.

While any synonym for huge will do in most contexts, gargantuan often carries connotations of excess or grotesque scale: a gargantuan meal, gargantuan debts.

It suggests not just bigness but bigness that strains credulity or propriety.
