sawed-off shotgun
Shortened scatter weapon
A sawed-off shotgun is a shotgun with its barrel cut shorter than legal length, typically under 18 inches.
The modification makes the weapon more concealable and spreads shot wider at close range, but it's illegal to own in most jurisdictions without special permits.
Associated with armed robbery and organized crime: He pulled a sawed-off from under his coat.
Also called a sawn-off shotgun in British English.
