pump-action
Forend-cycling firearm type
Pump-action describes a firearm mechanism where the shooter manually slides a grip backward and forward to eject a spent cartridge and chamber a new round: a pump-action shotgun.
The sliding motion resembles pumping.
The term extends to other devices with similar mechanisms: a pump-action water gun.
