shotgun houses
Rooms in line
Shotgun houses are narrow, rectangular homes where rooms are arranged in a single line from front to back, with no hallway—you walk through each room to reach the next.
Common in the American South, especially New Orleans, the name supposedly derives from the idea that a shotgun fired through the front door would pass straight through and out the back.
The old shotgun houses along the street had been converted to rentals.
