self-identifying
Declaring one's own
Self-identifying describes someone who defines their own identity in a particular way, especially regarding characteristics others might classify differently.
The term appears most often in discussions of gender, sexuality, race, or political affiliation: a self-identifying conservative, self-identifying as nonbinary.
It emphasizes that the classification comes from the person themselves rather than external observation or official designation.
