Keeping identity private
Closeted describes someone who keeps a significant aspect of their identity hidden, especially being gay or otherwise LGBTQ+: He was closeted for years before coming out to his family.
The metaphor is of hiding in a closet—concealed from public view.
Extended to other secrets: a closeted conservative in a liberal workplace.
The opposite is out or openly: She's been out since college.
