scupper

Ship's drainage hole

A scupper is a drain opening in a ship's side that allows water to run off the deck.

On land, scuppers appear in roofs, walls, or parapets to channel rainwater.

The verb scupper, chiefly British, means to sink a ship deliberately or to wreck a plan: Budget cuts scuppered the project.

To be scuppered is to be defeated or ruined.
