scraping

Dragging across roughly

Scraping is the act of dragging something hard or sharp across a surface, often producing a harsh sound: the scraping of chairs on the floor.

It removes material by abrasion: scraping ice off the windshield, scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Scrapings are the bits removed this way.

In computing, scraping means extracting data from websites automatically: web scraping, data scraping.
