emery

Dark corundum variety

Emery is a dark granular rock used as an abrasive for grinding and polishing.

Ground into powder or bonite to boards, cloth, or paper, it smooths and sharpens: an emery board for filing nails, emery cloth for metalwork.

The rock consists mainly of corundum mixed with iron oxides.
