waxing

Applying protective shine

Waxing is the process of applying and removing wax—most commonly to remove body hair.

Hot wax is spread on skin, allowed to harden, then stripped away, pulling hairs from the roots: She gets a waxing before vacation.

Waxing also means applying wax for shine or protection: waxing the car, waxing skis.

A waxing moon is one growing fuller, approaching full—the opposite of waning.
