scissors kick
Aquatic shearing motion
A scissors kick is a swimming or exercise movement where the legs open and close like scissor blades.
In swimming, it powers the sidestroke—one leg extends forward, the other back, then they snap together.
The same motion appears in soccer when a player kicks the ball while airborne with legs scissoring, and in exercises performed lying on one's side.
