sandhills

Grass-covered sandy terrain

Sandhills are areas of terrain characterized by rolling dunes or hills of sand, often stabilized by grass or sparse vegetation.

The term appears in several U.S. place names—most notably the Sand Hills of Nebraska, a vast grass-covered dune region, and the Sandhills of the Carolinas, a belt of ancient coastal sediment.

We drove through the sandhills at sunset.
