backdune

Behind the beach

A backdune is a dune that forms behind the primary dune line, sheltered from direct ocean winds.

These secondary dunes typically support more vegetation than exposed foredunes and play a crucial role in coastal ecosystems: The maritime forest began where the backdunes leveled out.

Also called secondary dune.
