loess

Airborne glacial dust

Loess is a fine-grained, yellowish-brown sediment deposited by wind, typically during glacial periods.

It forms highly fertile soil and covers vast areas of the American Midwest, central Europe, and northern China.

Loess erodes into distinctive steep-sided bluffs and ravines: The loess hills of western Iowa rise sharply from the floodplain.
