fens

Waterlogged flat terrain

Fens are low-lying areas of waterlogged, marshy ground—wetlands characterized by peat soil and distinctive plant communities.

Unlike bogs, fens receive water from groundwater rather than just rainfall, making them slightly less acidic.

The trail wound through the fens where cattails grew thick.

In Britain, the Fens refers specifically to the flat marshlands of eastern England, much of which has been drained for agriculture. (Capitalized Fens refers specifically to the English region.)
